What is asbestos?
It is a group of minerals that were commonly used for their heat resistance and insulating qualities. Asbestos is found in things like:
- Acoustic ceilings
- Attic insulation
- Roofing materials
- Glue that attaches floor tiles to concrete or wood
- Vinyl flooring
- Plaster walls
- Duct insulation
- Forms of linoleum
- Thermal insulation on basement boilers and pipes
- Window caulking and glazing
- HVAC duct insulation (usually found in corrugated or flat paper form)
- Siding material
- Fiber cement siding (usually 1/8 ” thick and 8’x4′ brittle)
- Corrugated heavy duty 8’x4′ panels
- Some paint
However, in the mid-1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned asbestos because of the health dangers from exposure to the asbestos fibers. If the asbestos is disturbed, tiny abrasive asbestos fibers can be airborne. You can inhale them into your lungs where they may cause dangerous health issues, including:
- Lung disease
Many older buildings still contain dangerous asbestos. According to a This Old House article, if the asbestos material is in good condition, you can typically leave it alone. But since these materials are old, they are easily damaged. Try not to handle the material that contains asbestos. It can crumble easily if you disturb it. If the materials become damaged then they can become a hazard when the fibers separate and become airborne. Bio-Clean Environmental Industries can help you remove the asbestos and get your property safe again.
When is asbestos a danger?
You may be in danger if your home or commercial building contains asbestos that has been damaged by:
For example, in a fire, asbestos is exposed to extremely high heat and becomes brittle and breakable. Once this happens the asbestos fibers can be inhaled and cause severe health problems that can lead to death. You should stay at least 1,000 feet away from this type of burning debris to protect yourself from asbestos exposure.
How do you repair or remove asbestos?
If your home or commercial building was built before 1975 you may have asbestos. Repairing asbestos means sealing or covering the asbestos material. A sealant can be used that binds the asbestos fibers together or coats them so fibers are not released.
Asbestos abatement is the only sure way to protect yourself from the risk of exposure. While more complicated, it involves getting rid of all of the dangerous asbestos.
